Hina’s Legacy Rescue Foundation is named after a beautiful dog named Hina, who was rescued in 2020 with another dog, Kaipo, from the mountains of Makaha. Since Chantell and Cassie didn’t yet have an established rescue, so another rescue stepped in to help. They sent Hina to an experienced foster who could care for her during her pregnancy and assist with the birth. Hina gave birth to her puppies and was a wonderful mother, but her health began to decline as the puppies drained her strength. Once the puppies were old enough to eat wet food, they were separated from Hina for her recovery. However, Hina’s love for her puppies was so strong that she broke through barriers to be with them, and the foster decided to keep them together. After this, Hina’s health improved, and she thrived in her foster home, growing happier and healthier each day.
Despite this progress, when the foster family decided to keep two of her puppies, Hina was returned to Chantell and Cassie. Sadly, Hina became depressed, withdrawn, and heartbroken, missing the foster family and the home where she had felt safe. Chantell did everything she could to comfort her, spending hours each day bonding with Hina, who yearned for companionship. Hina would lovingly gather her toys each night, tucking them into bed as if they were her puppies.
Tragically, while Chantell was away on a planned trip, Hina passed away. She was found with her toys tucked in under her as she had done every night, as if she had put her babies to bed one last time. There were no signs of distress or anything wrong with her physically—Hina simply died from a broken heart. Her deep emotional pain, stemming from the separation from her foster family, her puppies, and eventually from Chantell, ultimately took its toll. Hina’s legacy is a testament to the profound emotional bonds that animals form, and it continues to inspire Hina’s Legacy Rescue Foundation to advocate for animals with love and care.
